PROVO — The historic Provo Power smokestacks came tumbling down during a demolition early Sunday morning.

There were a few loud cracks from the demolition explosives and then, both smokestacks fell — one to the west and the other off to the southwest. A giant cloud of dust could be seen from many blocks away.

The smokestacks have been part of Provo’s skyline for more than 76 years, according to Provo City. But with the advancing of technology, the smokestacks have not been used for years.

The city determined the structures were unsafe in the event of an earthquake and it was too expensive to bring them up to safety standards.
