SALT LAKE CITY — Xavier Scruggs hit two solo home runs and Isaac Galloway added another to help the New Orleans Zephyrs defeat the Salt Lake Bees 4-3 at Smith’s Ballpark on Wednesday night.
The Zephyrs took an early lead after leadoff hitter Cole Figueroa doubled to start the game and later scored on an RBI single by Destin Hood that made it 1-0.
Salt Lake took a 2-1 lead thanks to an RBI single by Rafael Ortega and a sacrifice fly by C.J. Cron in the bottom of the third.
However, New Orleans tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings on the solo home runs. Scruggs led off the fourth with the first of his two home runs. He also led off the sixth with his second home run, which proved to be the difference in the game. Galloway hit the other solo home run in the fifth.
The Bees got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when Daniel Nava drove in Cal Towey with two outs that cut the deficit to 4-3. The Bees had the tying run on second, but Cron popped out in foul territory to end the inning.
Towey led the Bees with three hits, including a leadoff double in the bottom of the third. He scored two batters later on the Ortega RBI single.
With the loss, the Bees are still winless this season when trailing after the eighth inning. The loss also snapped a streak of six games in a row with a home run. The Bees have hit 15 home runs total in the month of August.
Wardrobe malfunction
Bees shortstop Brendan Ryan had an eventful pregame. The 14-year veteran must have forgotten the message of which uniform to wear as he came out in his white jersey while the Bees were in their black uniforms.
“The funny thing is it’s between 8 or 15 times that that could have or should have realistically happened,” Ryan said. “Either I figure it out at the last second or one of the young guys kind of blew it for everyone else and told me that I had wrong jersey on. I was proud of the guys that they let me make a fool of myself that time.”
After running onto the field and standing for the national anthem, Bees second baseman Sherman Johnson finally told Ryan about the uniform issue. Ryan laughed it off, took a bow and calmly switched uniforms.
Quentin Berry picked up his 35th stolen base of the season in the bottom of the second. He is four away from the Bees' single-season record of 39 set by Chone Figgins in 2002. Todd Cunningham and Rafael Ortega also had stolen bases, pushing the Bees' season total to 163. They are on pace to steal 190 bases.
