OGUNQUIT, Maine (AP) — Federal and Maine state agencies are investigating the use of rat poison along Ogunquit beach after a seagull was reportedly poisoned.
WMTW-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2aSFwJ4 ) that the town had been responding to complaints from tourists and residents about rodents this spring.
Interim town manager Mark O'Brien told the television station that the town is already cooperating with agencies like the Maine Warden Service and a pesticide control board.
Local business owners said they are concerned about the impact of rat poison being used around nearby trash bins.
The dead seagull is being held for testing, according to WMTW.
Sgt. Tim Spahr of the Maine Warden Service told the station that such poisoning could be a violation of the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act or pesticide control laws.
