This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

The Princeton Review annually evaluates over 20,000 internship programs being offered by employers to college students across the nation. It ranks those interns and always recognizes and honors the Top 10 internships that provide the best practical real world experience. Some of the past winners include The New York Yankees, The Academy of Arts and Sciences, The Supreme Court, The Washington Post, Microsoft and MTV.

One consistent winner over the last six years has also been the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network’s internship. It’s a program that helps college students experience a career in the financial service industry. Students get an opportunity to consult with clients and work in personal, business and estate planning markets while competing to sell policies.

But the mission of Northwestern’s internship program has been less to sell products than to develop the student. The program’s aim is to empower students for personal and professional growth by helping them develop a financial practice.

Here in Utah, the local McQueen Financial Group has nationally been the leading agency for the whole Northwestern Mutual internship program. Annually, with over 1,000 students across the United States representing some 400 campuses, the Utah Group is proud to have had several national champions. The last two years, BYU’s team has taken the top spot. In 1998, it was Southern Utah, and in 1999, the University of Utah took second.

With additional teams at Utah State, Weber State, Salt Lake Community College, Utah Valley State College, and Dixie, The McQueen Financial Group has always had four or five of the top 20 national teams. This last year, Tom Telford, from Salt Lake Community College was honored as the number one intern in the nation. Ben Jones, one of his classmates, was number seven.

Hank Warner, team leader for Southern Utah, was the number four intern this past year and has led his team to four top 10 finishes, including their 1998 championship.

Well, it’s great to know that the McQueen Financial Group and Northwestern Mutual are providing wonderful opportunities for students seeking a head start in building a career in the financial service industry.

For Zions Bank, I’m Fred Ball. I’m speaking on business.
