Computers have made our lives a lot easier, but not necessarily simpler. Think about it. As computers have become more useful, managing them has become more complex. But it doesn't have to be that way thanks to Lindon-based Altiris, Inc.
Since it was founded in 1998, Altiris has become the company many IT professionals rely on for getting software that will help them reduce the overall costs of managing their PC networks. It has quickly become a successful company, mainly because its founders and leader, CEO Greg Butterfield foresaw the future challenges of network systems.
Altiris began as part of KeyLabs, a PC test center. The original product, LabExpert, was created to help automate the setup of hundreds of PCs in the lab. Clients discovered LabExpert's capabilities and wanted to use the software themselves. With that, KeyLabs saw the software's potential and began developing and marketing it.
LabExpert quickly became a standard at schools with labs and classrooms full of PCs. But what made LabExpert work well in a classroom made it the wrong solution for business PCs that needed to be unique. Looking to move into the commercial PC market, Altiris quickly developed solutions that could not only clone the PCs, but also allow them to be customized with unique settings and software. They called the solution Altiris eXpress.
Altiris eXpress can be used to upgrade a PC from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 without ever touching the PC. And the same upgrade can be done on hundreds of PCs simultaneously, saving time, labor and money.
Altiris has created a full spectrum of products for systems management through key acquisitions. Altiris acquired Computing Edge, a company known for producing software that reports and resolves problems and manages IT assets. This year, Altiris has added TeckWorks, which excels in management over the Web, and Carbon Copy, the original remote control software from Compaq. Now Altiris' products not only make software installations easier, they make them easier to manage.
