RIVERTON — Two people are in critical condition after a six-car accident that closed the intersection of 13400 South Bangerter Highway for several hours Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said emergency crews responded to the crash which involved six vehicles, including a semitruck at about 3:30 p.m.
Bell said the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but it appeared that a black SUV traveling westbound on 13400 South ran a red light and hit a Honda, causing a chain-reaction involving more vehicles.
After hitting the Honda, the black SUV hit a gold SUV head-on, causing major injuries, Bell added.
The driver of the black SUV and the female driver of the gold SUV were transported in critical condition. Bell said the woman driving the black SUV was ejected from her vehicle.
No other injuries were reported.
The crash closed intersection for several hours while police collected evidence at the scene. The intersection was eventually reopened at around 8 p.m.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
