SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Sandy attorney has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in helping clients illegally avoid paying more than $20 million in taxes.
U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell on Friday also ordered Dennis B. Evanson to pay $2.7 million in fines and forfeit a Hummer and a Toyota Tundra.
Prosecutors said Evanson created fictitious losses, false insurance deductions and bogus capital losses as part of the schemes.
A federal jury in February convicted Evanson of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, tax evasion and assisting in the filing of false tax returns.
Four others pleaded guilty in the case and are awaiting sentencing.
