MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission and the University of Memphis are joining forces to create the Public Safety Institute, which will study policies and strategies for improving public safety.
The university said Thursday that Bill Gibbons, former Shelby County district attorney and the current commissioner of the of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security , will direct the new institute starting Sept. 1. Gibbons is stepping down from the department on Aug. 31.
The Public Safety Institute will draw on researchers from multiple disciplines and departments at the University of Memphis and other universities.
Led by a board of public and private sector leaders, the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission oversees the work of the Operation: Safe Community plan.
