SALT LAKE CITY — For those looking for a little more space at home, Utah might be the place.

Citing Census Bureau data, SmartAsset.com discovered the Wasatch Front is the best place to find a mansion in the U.S. per capita. In fact, Utah even claimed the top three spots among the 100 largest metro areas across the country analyzed.

The Provo-Orem metro area came in first place; Ogden-Clearfield placed second, followed by Salt Lake City.

What constitutes a mansion? The company defined those terms as a home containing five bedrooms and 15 total rooms in the house. Storage closets, bathrooms and hallways don’t qualify under that assessment.

While the website concluded that about 0.5 percent of all homes analyzed were mansions, the numbers in Utah were much larger. For example, Provo-Orem led the 100 metro areas with 2.4 percent qualifying to lead the way, and at least 1.4 percent of homes in all three metro areas were considered mansions.

The company noted a combination of recent job growth and Provo’s average household size being nearly one person more than the national average as possible reasons for its higher percentage of mansions.

No other state had more than one metro area in the Top 10, according to the site, and only seven total areas registered at least 1 percent. The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut and Washington, D.C., metro areas rounded out the top five.
