HOWELL, Box Elder County — Officials identified individuals they originally thought tried to kidnap two kids Sunday, but later detectives determined they were not trying to kidnap the children, according to the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office.

"The individuals are local residents and the entire situation was a misunderstanding," Chief Deputy Dale Ward wrote on Facebook.

It was initially reported that an 11-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy were playing in front of their home Sunday evening when a man approached them and demanded they get in the vehicle. The kids refused to comply and ran home, according to Ward.

Officials are gathering more information.
