PROVO — A woman escaped to a neighbor's home Monday after being bound and gagged by an ex-boyfriend and then beaten for about three hours, according to Provo police.

The neighbor called police around 5:30 a.m. Monday, believing an intruder had broken into their home to commit a crime, Provo police officer Nisha Henderson said. Upon arriving, officers found the beaten 33-year-old woman and she was taken to a hospital.

Investigators believe that Edgar Hernandez, 27, of West Valley City, was waiting for the woman when she arrived at her home near 300 North and 1600 West about 2:30 a.m., Henderson said.

Hernandez allegedly took her against her will to his truck parked nearby. There, he tied her wrists together, put a rag in her mouth and beat her for about three hours, Henderson said.

The woman "sustained injuries to almost every portion of her body," including bruises, cuts and strangulation marks around her neck, the officer said.

Police believe the woman escaped when Hernandez tried to take her out of the truck and into her own home. Hernandez gave chase, but the woman eluded him by running into the neighbor's home, Henderson said.

Officers who responded to the neighbor's phone call soon located Hernandez in the neighborhood and arrested him, according to Henderson. He was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

The woman was later released from the hospital, Henderson said.

Editor's Note: The original report stated Edgar Hernandez is 24. He is actually 27.
