Alex Cabrero ReportingA day that was supposed to about fun and picnicking with family turned into a nightmare. Now a 13-year old girl might be charged with attempted homicide.
Camping is a fun and popular thing to do on the July 24th weekend, but all that fun went away fast at one family's party, and deputies say it's all because of a 13-year old girl.
Even though they're in a newer building, the Summit County Sheriff's Office has been around for 152 years. That's plenty of time for unusual cases, like the one at Camperworld in Coalville from this past weekend.
Sgt. Greg Winterton, Summit Co. Sheriff's Office: "At this point we don't know why."
Sergeant Greg Winterton can't make any sense out of it, and really, neither can anyone else. A 13-year old girl was with her foster family at the campground. Another foster family joined them for a big picnic. For some reason, the girl started choking another girl, causing her to cough blood. Then later she tried to drown another girl in the campground's swimming pool.
Sgt. Greg Winterton: "She definitely wanted to hurt somebody. She went to great lengths to hurt somebody. She put them under the pool and tried to choke and drown them."
Fortunately, someone saw it happening and pulled her off the underwater girl before it was too late.
Sgt. Greg Winterton: "It could've been real serious, you know, if she successfully accomplished what she set out to do. We definitely could've been investigating a homicide instead of an attempted homicide."
Camperworld is a private campground and management there wouldn't talk to us or let us onto their property to show you the pool where the crime took place. But they say they want to find out who the family is because they will pull their membership.
Sgt. Greg Winterton: "We know that her history is violent, and she has said she was trying to kill people in the past."
That 13-year old girl, whose name we can't release because she's underage, is now in juvenile detention in Salt Lake County. She's from West Jordan. As for her two victims, we're told they're going to be okay.
