QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain defeated Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-3, 6-1 on Monday to reach the second round of the Ecuador Open.
No. 8 Carreno Busta was the only seeded player in action on Monday.
Bernard Tomic of Australia is the top-seeded player followed by Feliciano Lopez of Spain.
The Quito tournament kicks off the Latin American clay-court season. Following this week's event, the tournaments shift to Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Two other Latin American tournaments in Acapulco, at the end of the month, and in Monterrey, Mexico, in early March have been switched from clay to hardcourt.
The Rio Open will feature last year's champion David Ferrer and the 2014 winner Rafael Nadal. The top woman is Eugenie Bouchard of Canada.
