COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Spain and Italy received the full number of starters for men's road events at the Rio Olympics on Monday, while the U.S. was granted just two starters in the road race and two in the time trial.

The UCI, the sport's global governing body, determines the number of starters for each nation based on previous year's results. The U.S. was 18th in the WorldTour rankings and fifth in the America Tour, leaving it the same number of starters as Latvia, Estonia and others.

The U.S. had five riders at the London Olympics.

Belgium, Colombia and Great Britain will join Spain and Italy in starting the maximum of five riders in the road race. The U.S. joins Spain and Italy among those with the maximum of two in the time trial.
