LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say Rene Angelil, the husband and manager of Celine Dion, has died in Las Vegas. He was 73 and had battled throat cancer. The Clark County Coroner says Angelil died at home in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson under the care of a doctor. The coroner said he died of natural causes and no further investigation is expected.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Some of Nevada's top elected Republicans say they're setting aside their differences after a war of words last week over a school choice lawsuit. Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison said he'll suspend a lawsuit he filed on behalf of parents seeking a speedy court decision preserving Nevada's new Education Savings Account program. Attorney General Adam Laxalt said he'll withdraw a motion to dismiss that suggested Hutchison was being unethical.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — State officials have awarded $5.6 million in grants to hire more than 160 social workers and mental health professionals in Nevada schools. The awards are part of a broad anti-bullying initiative coordinated by Nevada's new Office for a Safe and Respectful Learning Environment. Lawmakers voted last spring to authorize major anti-bullying initiatives proposed by Gov. Brian Sandoval and aimed at preventing trauma and suicide.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas woman accused of kidnapping and killing her ex-boyfriend's 10-year-old daughter in December 2012 has accepted a plea deal that is expected to spare her the possibility of facing the death penalty. KLAS-TV reports 53-year-old Brenda Stokes Wilson originally pleaded not guilty and was scheduled to go to trial last April. She's expected to get a life prison term at her sentencing set for March 9.
