LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas woman accused of kidnapping and killing her ex-boyfriend's 10-year-old daughter in December 2012 has accepted a plea deal that is expected to spare her the possibility of facing the death penalty. KLAS-TV reports 53-year-old Brenda Stokes Wilson originally pleaded not guilty and was scheduled to go to trial last April. She's expected to get a life prison term at her sentencing set for March 9.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — State officials have awarded $5.6 million in grants to hire more than 160 social workers and mental health professionals in Nevada schools. The awards are part of a broad anti-bullying initiative coordinated by Nevada's new Office for a Safe and Respectful Learning Environment. Eleven districts and six charter schools received funding. Awards were based in part on which schools needed the most intervention.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada prison officials say they're adding more guards and training officers how to use rubber bullets in an effort to end deadly shootings behind bars. A report was commissioned as Nevada faces lawsuits over prison shootings, including one at High Desert State Prison in 2014 that left an inmate dead. It recommended the state reduce the routine use of birdshot.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say Rene Angelil, the husband and manager of Celine Dion, has died in Las Vegas. He was 73 and had battled throat cancer. Angelil died at home in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson under the care of a doctor. The Clark County Coroner said he died of natural causes and no further investigation is expected. A representative for Dion couldn't immediately be reached.
