ST. GEORGE — A man who was walking in the northbound lane of state Route 18 in St. George was hit and killed Wednesday night, investigators said.
Justin R. Maples, 35, stopped his Pontiac Grand Am on the right shoulder of the highway and left his vehicle to walk along SR-18 for an unknown reason at about 7:45 p.m., according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Investigators said he died on impact when hit by a silver Toyota Prius about a half mile away from his Grand Am.
Officials said they believe Maples was intoxicated at the time of his death. He was a St. George resident.
"Further investigation showed that earlier in the evening Mr. Maples had been reported as a possible impaired driver, but was not located by law enforcement," a statement from UHP reads.
The driver of the Prius called police immediately after hitting Maples, according to UHP. They are working with officials as the investigation continues.
A woman was inside Maple's Grand Am at the time of his death, according to UHP.
