DINOSAUR, Colo. (AP) — With the Powerball jackpot estimated at a record $1.5 billion, thousands of Utah residents are crossing into Colorado to buy what they hope is the winning ticket. The Craig Daily Press reports that a liquor store co-owner in Dinosaur said he had $48,000 in Powerball sales from Thursday to Sunday evening. Lottery tickets are not sold in Utah, which can send residents to bordering states when jackpots get high.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new legislative proposal would offer optional training to Utah's middle school students on what to do if they encounter a weapon or if a gunman enters their school. Republican Sen. Todd Weiler says not all parents may know how to talk to their kids about those issues. The course would include instruction on what to do if a student brings a gun to school or how to stay safe if there's a school shooter.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Salt Lake City School District is considering starting a later start time for its high schools. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the district is surveying to parents on whether to push back the 7:45 a.m. start time to 8 a.m. or later. The board is slated to discuss the issue today.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City police say they found more than 600 vehicles left warming up and unattended throughout the city in less than three hours, as part of an investigation into recent car thefts. Officers say many of the vehicles' doors were unlocked and were children inside. Almost everyone told police they had only left their cars running "for a second." None of the drivers were cited.
