SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Board of Education says the state superintendent will take a 90-day medical leave of absence.
Board spokeswoman Emilie Wheeler says Superintendent Brad Smith has dealt with chronic health challenges recently. She didn't elaborate on his condition but did say the problems aren't considered life-threatening.
She says he is expected to return after those 90 days. According to Wheeler, Smith's decision was partly a response to the demands of the upcoming legislative session, which runs from late January to early March.
Deputy Superintendent Sydnee Dickson has been named acting superintendent.
