OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea (AP) — In the wake of North Korean claims of a successful hydrogen bomb test, the U.S. today provided a reminder of its own might and support for its allies. A nuclear capable B-52 bomber flew low over South Korea, escorted by fighter jets. North Korea will read the fly-over as a threat. Any hint of America's nuclear power enrages Pyongyang, as does criticism of its leaders.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Mexican official says a secret interview with actor Seann Penn for Rolling Stone magazine last year helped authorities track and recapture drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. In the interview published yesterday, Guzman defends his work at the head of the world's biggest drug trafficking organization and denies responsibility for high addiction rates. He reasons that addiction levels won't change when he's gone.
UNDATED (AP) — There are now at least $1.3 billion reasons to buy a ticket for the next Powerball lottery drawing. The record jackpot of nearly $950 million in last night's drawing went unclaimed when no ticket matched all six Powerball numbers. The winning numbers last night were 16-19-32-34-57 and the Powerball number 13.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's state-run news agency says authorities have arrested three people in connection with the killing of a Syrian journalist in southern Turkey. Naji al-Jarf, the editor-in-chief of pro-opposition Hinta Magazine died after being shot in the street in December. He was the third Syrian journalist to be killed in an attack in Turkey in recent months.
