RENO, Nev. (AP) — The latest storm to hit the Sierra dropped a foot of snow on ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, with a couple of inches in the valleys and freezing fog that caused dozens of crashes on slippery roads from Reno to Fallon. A winter weather advisory remains in effect through this morning along the Sierra's eastern front. The National Weather Service predicts 4 to 8 inches of snow at lower elevations and as much as 16 inches above 7,000 feet.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A preliminary hearing is postponed until Jan. 21 for a 38-year-old man accused of pulling a gun and shooting a veteran Las Vegas police officer. A prosecutor says evidence was still being collected and provided to the defense in the attempted murder and battery case against Teag Lanier Fox. A defense attorney says his client plans to plead not guilty.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Jan. 20 court date has been set for a couple accused of killing a California man who police say was sleeping in his car outside a northwest Las Vegas gym. Kyle Wad Staats and his girlfriend, 19-year-old Megan Lee Hippie, are charged. A judge postponed arraignment to allow time to appoint attorneys to the case.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — IBM CEO Virginia Rometty says the future of gadgets is not just connectivity, but the ability to analyze and "think." Rometty says her company's "Watson" artificial brain can enhance a variety of consumer products. At the CES gadget show, she announced new partnerships with Under Armour, the athletic apparel maker; Medtronic, which makes medical equipment; and Japan's SoftBank.
