BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley will tour areas in his state damaged by floods a day after declaring a state of emergency in all counties affected by excessive rain. Unseasonably warm temperatures across the southeastern U.S. this week spawned severe weather blamed for deaths in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. A total of 15 people were killed.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Forecasters are predicting a "historic blizzard" for the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. The blizzard warning for the region takes effect this evening and runs through midday on Monday. Other parts of Texas and Oklahoma, including El Paso, are under winter storm warnings, while North Texas, central Oklahoma and central Kansas are under a winter storm watch.
CHICAGO (AP) — A medical examiner has identified two people killed in a Chicago police shooting as a 19-year-old black man and 55-year-old black woman. Earlier today, police said an officer responding to a domestic disturbance shot and killed two people after being "confronted by a combative subject." Police say the shooting is under investigation.
BEIRUT (AP) — A U.S.-backed coalition of rebels in Syria has captured a major dam on the Euphrates River in the north from the Islamic State group. The coalition, known as Syria Democratic Forces, seized the dam as part of its offensive aimed at cutting supply lines between IS strongholds in northern Syria.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A gunpowder horn that a descendant and two experts believe was owned by Alexander Hamilton goes up for auction next month in New Jersey. The auction will take place on Jan. 11, Hamilton's birthday. One of America's Founding Fathers, Hamilton was also the first U.S. Treasury Secretary.
