ASHLAND, Miss. (AP) — A line of spring-like storms continues marching east dumping torrential rain that prompted flood watches and warnings in many parts of the South. Earlier, an outbreak of December tornadoes killed at least 14 people and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes.
LONDON (AP) — The potential for more flooding from storms in Britain is taking away the Christmas holiday for British ministers who plan to meet. The government's Cobra committee usually deals with national security threats but also copes with public safety issues. Heavy rain is forecast in parts of Britain today. The worst flooding is expected in northern England, which has been hard hit in recent weeks.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina authorities say an off-duty officer at a crowded mall shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at him following a shooting. Police in Charlotte say a long-standing dispute between people who knew one another sparked the shooting that sent shoppers ducking for cover. Police say no one else was hit and there were no other reports of injuries.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A woman described as bearded and weighing around 400 pounds is in custody in San Diego after initially fleeing the scene of a stabbing. The woman is a suspect in the stabbing of a man who asked her for a cigarette. The man was hospitalized, but he is expected to survive.
TOKYO (AP) — Okinawa's fight against relocation of a U.S. military base is beginning to find its way to Japanese courts. The island sued the central government today. The central government filed its own lawsuit against Gov. Takeshi Onaga last month, after he rejected an order to reinstate approval, issued by his predecessor, for land reclamation for the new base. Many residents have been long frustrated by U.S. troop presence and have complained about noise, pollution and crime.
