PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — Yavapai County is not dealing with its first known rabid domestic cat since the late 1950s after all.
County animal control officials said Tuesday that a first test was positive for rabies, but a secondary test by the Center for Disease Control indicated the cat is not rabid.
As part of normal protocol, the CDC will receive a specimen testing positive for rabies with the goal to determine the type of wildlife that originally transmitted rabies to the domestic animal under reviewed.
It's an attempt to identify the species of animal to watch for in the affected community area.
When the CDC completed that, officials determined rabies wasn't present in the cat that was hit by a car on Dec. 3 in the Castle Canyon subdivision of Prescott Valley.
