ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Jimmy Gavin scored 23 points and Zach Price had 19 and Winthrop used a big advantage at the foul line to defeat Alabama State 92-84 on Tuesday.
Keon Johnson added 14 points, Xavier Cooks had 13 and 10 rebounds and Roderick Perkins 12 points for the Eagles (8-3), who made 16 of 20 free throws in the second half.
The Hornets (4-7) also had all five starters in double figures, led by Jamel Waters with 24. Steve Rogers had 15, Corvon Butler 14 with 10 boards, Bobby Brown had 14 and Tony Armstrong 11. Alabama State was 7 of 8 from the line.
Alabama State led 50-45 at the half but a 3-point play from Gavin and four points by Price quickly put the Eagles ahead early in the second half. The game was at 61 near the midway point when Winthrop put together a 12-3 run with eight points coming from the line.
