SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah state attorneys say it cost $400,000 to settle a suit filed against prison officials after an inmate died when he didn't get dialysis for two days.
The Utah Attorney General's Office released the amount of the settlement Tuesday in response to a public records request.
Ramon C. Estrada died of an apparent heart attack related to kidney failure on April 5, after two technicians switched shifts and no showed up to give him treatment. He had been imprisoned on a rape conviction in August 2005.
A lawyer for the Estrada family has said that the settlement with prison officials helped bring them some closure.
It was disclosed on Dec. 1, but lawyers initially declined to discuss the details.
The suit is still ongoing against the provider, a University of Utah clinic.
