WEST VALLEY CITY — Police say they "negotiated the surrender" of a man who shot and injured another man during a fight in a Wal-Mart parking lot last week.
Cole Shields, 31, turned himself over to police on Monday, according to West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
Shields, of Holladay, allegedly shot at a man he had been arguing with at a Wal-Mart store, 3180 W. 5600 South, on Oct. 14, hitting him once in each foot. The dispute began inside the store and became physical in the parking lot, Vainuku said.
"The cause of this argument is not yet clear," she said Monday.
The victim was trying to get to his vehicle when Shields shot at him five times, hitting him twice, Vainuku said. Shields had also followed him outside the store, she said. The man was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.
West Valley police earlier released surveillance images of Shields, asking for the public's help identifying him. He was booked Monday into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, aggravated assault and other offenses.
A 24-year-old woman was with Shields at the time of the shooting. Vainuku said the woman has met with police and was not arrested, but added the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office will review her role in the incident and determine whether or not to file charges.
