NORTH LOGAN — A local woman earned her sixth pink Mary Kay Cadillac Monday after working as a consultant for 22 years.
North Logan resident Julie Griffin said she'd just had her third child when her aunt introduced her to Mary Kay. Griffin had just quit working in the medical field so she could stay home with her children and her family had moved to a new house. Her new house had a formal living room and she didn't have furniture for it so Griffin decided to start selling Mary Kay products to earn enough money to buy furniture for her living room.
"When my baby was 9 months old, I still didn't have furniture and I thought, 'Gosh, maybe I could try this Mary Kay thing,' " she said. "So that's ultimately why I started and I thought, 'I'm just going to do this to get a couch and then I'm not doing it anymore because I'm not the Mary Kay type.' I don't know what type I thought they were, but I didn't think I was it."
Griffin said she earned her first vehicle, a red Pontiac Grand Am, within four months of working as a consultant, earning $40,000 retail in the allotted four-month deadline. She recruited more consultants and gradually worked her way up to senior sales director. She has earned 10 vehicles during her time at Mary Kay, six of which were the iconic Mary Kay Cadillac.
To earn a Mary Kay Cadillac, directors and their consultants need to earn a combined $96,000 retail in six months. Griffin said directors qualify to earn a new car every two years and can choose to take cash or the car. She once again chose the vehicle prize and was awarded her sixth pink Cadillac at the Axtell Taylor GM in Logan on Monday.
"A lot of my consultants and customers, I think, would be surprised if I drove a different car," Griffin said. "My youngest now came home from the hospital in a pink Cadillac and she's 14 (years old now.)"
Griffin said the company pays for the vehicle registration, taxes and maintenance so she likes choosing the car over the cash prize. She said she's enjoyed working for Mary Kay and loves the opportunities that it's given her while allowing her to stay at home with her children.
"It's been pretty fun … and helping people to get a new look is such a fun excuse to get together with people," Griffin said. "I think it's an awesome opportunity for women to really excel and put their priorities in order. Money isn't everything, but it sure is fun to have choices for your family. I feel very grateful. It's been such a blessing to our family."
She hopes to eventually become a national sales director with the option of earning a pink escalade.
