FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — Thousands of Alaska residents are without power after a major snowstorm socked the Fairbanks area and forced a grocery to store frozen food outside.

The National Weather Service says 11.2 inches of snow fell in Fairbanks through early Wednesday.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (http://is.gd/XOEUVU) that 15,000 Golden Valley Electric Association customers were without power Wednesday because of trees falling into power lines. Some residents may be without power for days.

The borough and Red Cross are setting up areas for people who want a place to get warm. Schools are closed, and sporting events have been canceled.

Freezers failed at a Fred Meyer grocery store, and employees loaded frozen food into carts and parked them outside. The temperature was 29 degrees at noon Wednesday.
