RENO, Nev. (AP) — Republican former Assemblywoman Heidi Gansert says she'll run for the northern Nevada Senate seat being vacated by fellow Republican Greg Brower.

Gansert first announced her candidacy on Twitter on Tuesday. The Nevada Senate Republican Caucus quickly endorsed her for the District 15 seat.

Gansert served as an assemblywoman from 2004 to 2010, then became Gov. Brian Sandoval's chief of staff for nearly two years. She currently serves as the director of external relations at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Her announcement comes a few days after Brower announced he won't seek re-election to the seat in 2016.

Brower has served in the Senate since 2011, but told newspapers that it was challenge to balance his legislative duties with his full-time job as a lawyer at the firm Snell & Wilmer.
