COLUMBUS, Ky. (AP) — The latest on the oil spill along the Mississippi River that caused a section of the waterway to be shut down (all times local):

___

5:30 p.m.

Joe Hogancamp of Bardwell, Kentucky, was putting his 20-foot-long boat into the Mississippi River just downstream from where a collision of two barges sent oil gushing into the mighty waterway.

Hogancamp and his two friends were going out onto the river to do some dove hunting, but he said he might refrain from fishing in the area affected by the oil spill.

"It might mess up some of the fishing," he said. "I'd say it's going to hurt the environment a little bit. I doubt we'll eat some fish (from the river) for a little while."

The collision occurred late Wednesday near Columbus, Kentucky. The Coast Guard said in a statement Thursday that it is working with the barge owner and an oil spill response organization to determine the amount of slurry oil that spilled. The cause is under investigation.

A collision between two tow boats that caused an oil spill on the Mississippi River has not affected service at a port in Kentucky near the accident site.

Keleia McCloud, assistant port director, said Hickman's port and ferry services are operating normally. Hickman is about 17 miles south of the site of the crash that occurred near Columbus, Kentucky.

Hickman County official Kenny Wilson says no municipalities in the county have experienced disruptions from the spill. The water supply in Columbus is not affected because it comes from wells.
