HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities in the Houston area are searching for whoever gunned down a sheriff's deputy in uniform while he was filling up his patrol car at a suburban station. Police said they have a description of the male suspect, who was driving a red or maroon Ford Ranger truck, and have begun an intensive search.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Prosecutors in Missouri say they will seek the death penalty against a convicted felon with a violent past who is charged with five counts of first-degree murder. Brandon Howell is accused of using a shotgun to kill three people and fatally beating two others in a quiet south Kansas City neighborhood in 2014.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Tropical Storm Erika has weakened, but not before at least 20 people died on the small eastern Caribbean island of Dominica. Another 31 people are missing. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said that Erika could recover some strength as it approaches Florida late Sunday. Florida residents are warned to brace for heavy rain.

VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) — British Columbia's Ministry of Environment says a barge being loaded by a metal recycling company dumped as many as 20 vehicles in the water when it tipped in Victoria's harbor. Authorities say booms are in the water to contain any pollution and the ministry says it appears that the vehicles were cleaned of fuel before being loaded onto the barge.

BEIJING (AP) — Authorities say poisonous gasses overcame workers at a paper mill in central China, killing seven and injuring two. It's the latest in a spate of deadly accidents in China involving dangerous chemicals. Authorities say the accident occurred Friday after an employee fell into a pool filled with poisonous waste paper pulp during a cleaning operation. His co-workers rushed to help him but were overcome by the noxious gasses.
