HONG KONG (AP) — Asian stocks have closed higher thanks to yesterday's upbeat report on second quarter U.S. economic growth. The Shanghai Composite Index in mainland China led regional gains, rising 4.8 percent. But the global rally is fizzling in Europe, where benchmark indexes in France, Germany and Britain have opened lower. Futures suggest a lower opening on Wall Street.
NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices have started slipping again, after looking like they'd extend yesterday's gains. Benchmark U.S. crude posted its biggest one-day gain in six years Thursday, leaping almost $4 to settle at $42.56 a barrel in New York. But it's started retreating in electronic trading today, down 28 cents at last check.
WASHINGTON (AP) — As the trading week winds down, stock investors won't be getting much more economic news from the government. There's only one government report due out today. The Commerce Department will release its report on personal income and spending for July.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter today plans to announce Pentagon funding for a new venture to develop electronics and sensors that can flex and stretch and could be built into clothing or the skins of ships and aircraft. Among the possibilities, the high-tech investment could lead to wearable health monitors that could be built into military uniforms or used to assist the elderly.
NEW YORK (AP) — Did someone with Subway know about former spokesman Jared Fogle's alleged sexual transgressions? An attorney for former Subway franchise owner Cindy Mills says Mills and Fogle swapped phone numbers — and in conversations, Fogle started talking about paying to have sex with minors. Mills says she reported that to Subway ad fund official Jeff Moody back in 2008. Subway didn't respond to a request for comment yesterday.
