WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania family is receiving more than $6 million in a medical malpractice case stemming from the death of a 2-year-old who was treated and sent home by Harrisburg Hospital.
The family of Lauren Readler was awarded the damages following a civil trial in Luzerne County.
Lauren was treated for stomach issues months before dying of sepsis caused by a ruptured stomach.
Her parents filed the suit against doctors at Pinnacle Health at Harrisburg Hospital, Geisinger Partners in Pediatrics-Nanticoke, and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
The Readlers' attorney argued the doctors failed to diagnose Lauren's condition and sent her home without surgery or care instructions. He said they repeatedly missed signs of her condition.
The defense said it was a "one in a million case" and that doctors acted appropriately.
