SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert says he's in favor of allotting increased state funds to train more police officers how to deescalate encounters. Herbert said at his monthly news conference on KUED-TV that officers should know how to diffuse situations, which often occur with people undergoing mental health crises. He also advocated providing police with body cameras and putting cameras in patrol vehicles to keep everybody honest.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — A Utah State University professor who was criticized for signing a U.S. Supreme Court brief that argues against gay marriage says he plans to remove his name from the filing. USU associate professor of family, consumer and human development Kay Bradford told The Herald Journal newspaper in Logan that his views have been misunderstood.

FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A northern Utah teenager convicted of killing his two younger brothers last year has been re-sentenced in the case after violating the terms of his plea deal by attacking a fellow inmate at a juvenile detention center. A judge in Farmington sentenced 17-year-old Aza Vidinhar to serve 15 years to life in prison for the 2013 stabbing deaths of his brothers, ages 4 and 10.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Investigators say a young boy started a large field fire in West Valley City. KUTV reports that police have questioned a young boy who they suspect started the fire early Wednesday. It took crews more than an hour to extinguish the fire, the second blaze in the area this month. Arson investigators are handling the case.
