PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Heavy equipment is being brought in to the scene of last night's Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia that killed at least six people. All seven cars of the Northeast Regional Train 188 left the tracks, sending 144 people to hospitals. Several people are in critical condition. The train was traveling from Washington to New York City, along the nation's busiest corridor. Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia has stopped.
CHAUTARA, Nepal (AP) — People in the small Nepalese town of Chautara are being told to leave buildings in danger of falling after a second major earthquake in less than three weeks. The evacuation orders came after yesterday's 7.3-magnitude quake that killed at least 65 people, injured nearly 2,000 others and caused landslides that blocked roads. Chautara is a foothills town that became a hub for rescuers and humanitarian aid following Nepal's April 25 quake that killed more than 8,100 people.
CHAUTARA, Nepal (AP) — U.S. officials are still searching for a U.S. Marine helicopter that was reported missing yesterday while delivering disaster aid to northeast Nepal. The chopper was carrying six Marines and two Nepalese soldiers. The search is concentrated in an area 50 miles from Kathmandu.
BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is asking member countries to show solidarity with partners bearing the brunt of the migration wave in the Mediterranean, and it's warning that it plans to enforce asylum rules. European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans says "it is time for us to apply the existing rules properly." Timmermans unveiled today a plan to eventually require the 28 EU countries to share migrants.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean analysts are split on whether an alleged bloody purge in North Korea is signaling strength or weakness from leader Kim Jong Un, who took power after his father's 2011 death. South Korea's spy agency says Kim had his defense chief executed with an anti-aircraft gun for complaining about the young ruler, talking back to him and sleeping during a meeting Kim was conducting.
