IONIA, Mich. (AP) — Prison officials say more than 100 inmates at an Ionia County facility have experienced stomach flu-like symptoms in the past 10 days.
Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz tells The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/1H2UnDw ) that inmates at the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility began having symptoms on May 2. The gastrointestinal issues include upset stomachs, vomiting and diarrhea.
Gautz says 21 inmates are being quarantined to protect staff and other prisoners as officials try to figure out the source of the sickness. He says it's unlikely that it was caused by a large-scale incident such as food contamination because of how slowly symptoms have spread.
According to Gautz, new reports of symptoms have tapered off in recent days.
