SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A scaled-back proposal restricting the tattooing of minors has passed the Utah House of Representatives.

House members voted 50-24 Monday night to approve the bill and send it to the Senate.

The bill bars anyone under 14 from getting a tattoo. Those who are older than 14 but not yet legal adults can get a tattoo if they have written authorization from a parent.

The proposal from Rep. LaVar Christensen, a Draper Republican, originally would have instituted an outright ban on tattooing minors, even if they had permission from a parent.

Christensen revised the proposal after fellow lawmakers worried it was too intrusive.

Many Salt Lake City tattoo parlors already refuse clients under 18, even with parental consent.

Christensen says most tattoo artists he spoke to supported his efforts.
