VALHALLA, N.Y. (AP) — Federal investigators are trying to answer what they call the big question on everyone's mind: Why was the driver of an SUV stopped on the tracks between lowered gates.as a commuter train approached the crossing about 20-miles north of New York City. The Metro-North train plowed in the vehicle Tuesday evening causing a fiery wreck that killed six people.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The board chairman of Washington, D.C.'s transit system says he welcomes a safety inspection by federal authorities. The inspection is intended to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Metro network and identify areas where it can improve safety. A fire in a tunnel last month filled a train with smoke, killing one person and sending more than 80 others to hospitals.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Rescuers are searching for 12 people still missing after a TransAsia Airways turboprop plane crashed into a shallow river shortly after takeoff in Taiwan's capital. At least 31 people are known to have perished in Wednesday's disaster. There were 58 people aboard Flight 235. Rescuers in rubber rafts pulled 15 people alive from the wreckage during daylight.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former rap mogul Marion "Suge (shug)" Knight remains in a hospital where he was taken a day earlier for chest pains after pleading not guilty to a murder charge. Knight is accused of intentionally running down and killing a friend in suburban Los Angeles on Jan. 29. Another man was hurt. Knight, who is 49, founded Death Row Records.

NEW YORK (AP) — NBC "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams is apologizing for incorrectly claiming as recently as last week that he rode on a helicopter that came under enemy fire when he was reporting in Iraq in 2003. Instead, Williams told the audience Wednesday night that he was in another helicopter trailing a Chinook that actually was hit.
