ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Gale-force winds and choppy seas have trapped passengers on the top decks of a burning Italian ferry, hampering the evacuation of nearly 500 people. The ship caught fire off the Greek island of Corfu early today. Greek and Italian rescue helicopters and vessels struggled to reach the stricken ferry, with nearby merchant ships lining up to form a wall against the raging gusts. There are no reports of injuries or imminent danger of sinking.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — It's been more than 12 hours with no sign of a missing AirAsia plane that disappeared over the Java Sea with 162 people aboard. Officials say there was no distress call but the plane, headed to Singapore from Indonesia, did request a diversion due to weather.
JERUSALEM (AP) — An Illinois man is being detained in Israel on charges of plotting anti-Muslim violence. An Israeli court ordered Everett Adam Livvix held until the end of court proceedings against him. He was arrested in November and charged with weapons possession. The indictment accused Livvix of planning to blow up Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem. His lawyer says Livvix denies the charges.
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Investigators first suspected a hate crime but family members say a 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of vandalizing the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno on Christmas day is mentally ill with schizophrenia. Authorities say that Asif Mohammad Khan's answers to police questioning have changed their theory about the crime.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The U.S.-NATO combat mission in Afghanistan has formally ended after 13 years with a ceremony at their base in Kabul. The main fighting responsibility now shifts to Afghan forces, though some 13,500 troops, mostly American, will remain in support roles.
