In the areas of arts and movement education, special needs students are an underserved population. Often those with special needs have reduced access to dance, theater, and other extra-curricular activities. CenterPoint Legacy Theatre Academy in Davis County has created a group called Friend to Friend. This free class allows students with special needs to come together on a weekly basis to dance, sing, act, and become part of a team. They strengthen their rhythm, music recognition, memory, and most importantly their imagination. This class improves both physical and mental health, and instills healthy behaviors in students. Physical improvements include strength, flexibility, coordination, and muscle memory. Mental health benefits are social skills, improved confidence, self-expression, and peer appreciation. Family members and friends enjoy watching the students shine on stage in performances. Join Friend to Friend for their next performance on December 13 at 11:30 a.m. SelectHealth recognizes the artistic approach of the CenterPoint Legacy Theatre Academy as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
