SALT LAKE CITY — During the snowy winter months, several roads and highways across Utah are closed due to safety concerns and the prohibitive costs of keeping them open, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
If you have plans to travel across Utah this winter, here are the nine roadway closures of which to be aware. UDOT officials ask commuters to plan alternate routes during these annual winter closures.
State Route 39, Monte Cristo Highway
State Road 39 also known as the Monte Cristo Highway will be closing Nov. 17 at 12 a.m. and will remain closed until late May 2015, according to a UDOT news release. SR-39 will be closed from the Ant Flat Road area east of Huntsville to milepost 56 near Woodruff.
Commuters can find alternate routes by using I-84, I-80, Utah's SR-16 and SR-167 and Wyoming SR-89.
State Route 65, Big Mountain Highway
State Road 65 also known as the Big Mountain Highway will also be closing Nov. 17 at 12 a.m. and will remain closed until late May 2015. SR-65 will be closed just north of the Emigration Canyon turn-off to one mile south of the East Canyon Reservoir.
Motorists who normally travel this route should use I-84 and SR-66 from Morgan or SR-65 from Henefer to access the East Canyon recreation area during the winter road closure, the news release said.
State Route 224

State Route 224 has been closed for the season and will remain closed until late May or early June 2015, according to the UDOT website. The road was closed between milepost 17.7 near Brighton and milepost .84 near Park City. Motorists who normally travel this route should use I-80 and U.S. 40/U.S. 189 as alternate routes.
State Route 190, Guardsman Pass
State Route 224 also known as Guardsman Pass was closed for the season on Nov. 7 and will remain closed until late May or early June 2015. The road was closed between milepost 17.7 near Brighton and milepost .84 near Park City. Motorists who normally travel this route should use I-80 and U.S. 40/U.S. 189 as alternate routes.
State Route 92, Alpine Loop
State Route 92 also known as the Alpine Loop has been closed for the season and will remain closed until late May or early June 2015. The road was closed between milepost 13.5 in American Fork Canyon and milepost 225 near Sundance.
Motorists who normally travel this route should use US-189 as an alternate route. That alternate route is 31 minutes faster, according to a UDOT study.
State Route 150, Mirror Lake Highway
State Route 150 also known as Mirror Lake Highway is currently open, but will be closed when it becomes impassable to conditions, UDOT officials said. When the road is closed for the season, it will remain closed until late May or early June 2015.

The road will be closed from milepost 14.7 near Kamas to milepost 48.6 near Evanston, Wyoming. Commuters can use I-80 as an alternate route and from Park City to Evanston, it is an hour and 6 minutes faster, according to a UDOT study.
State Route 35, Wolf Creek Pass
State Route 35, also known as Wolf Creek Pass, is currently open, but will be closed to vehicles when it becomes impassable to conditions, UDOT officials said. The road will only be open to snowmobiles after Dec. 20 until late May or early June 2015.
The road will be closed between milepost 12.5 near Woodland and milepost 28.5 near Hanna. Commuters can use US-40 as an alternative route.
State Route 153, Mt. Holly Junction Road
State Route 153, also known as Mt. Holly Junction Road, is currently open, but will be closed when it becomes impassable to conditions, UDOT officials said. When the road is closed for the season, it will remain closed until late May or early June 2015.
The road will be closed from milepost 21.3 near Beaver to milepost 39.5 near Junction. Commuters can use SR-20/US-89 as alternate routes and it is 9 minutes faster than SR-153, according to a UDOT study.
State Route 148, Cedar Mountain
State Route 148, or Cedar Mountain, is currently open, but will close when it becomes impassable to conditions, UDOT officials said. When the road is closed for the season, it will remain so until late May or early June 2015.
The road will be closed from mile post .2 near US-89 Tod’s Junction to milepost 19 near Cedar Breaks National Monument. Motorists who normally travel this route should use US-89 and SR-143 as alternate routes.
