PITTSBURGH (AP) — This evening's baseball playoff game is the National League Wild Card game. The contest features the Pittsburgh Pirates at home to San Francisco's Giants. On the mound for the home team will be Edinson Volquez (VOHL'-kehz) against Madison Bumgarner. During the season the Pirates took four of the six games the two teams played.
KANSAS CITY (AP) — The American League Wild Card game was a good one last night as the Royals beat the Athletics 9-8 in 12 innings. Playing in front of their own fans, the Royals scored twice in the bottom of the 12th to get the win. KC will now face the Angels in Anaheim in the opening game of their American League divisional playoff series.
NEW YORK (AP) — The off season has begun for most of the Major League teams and for some players that means surgery. Case in point is Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran, who has undergone elbow surgery to remove a bone spur and loose pieces that limited his throwing ability for most of the 2014 season. The Yankees say Beltran can start throwing and hitting in about six weeks.
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Guess who has been voted PGA Tour player of the year? If you said Rory McIlroy, you are correct. He had a great 2014 with wins in two majors, the British Open and the PGA Championship. He finished with $8.2 million in prize money and won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average.
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders promoted offensive line coach Tony Sparano to interim head coach yesterday, to replace the fired Dennis Allen. Sparano had a 29-32 record as head coach in Miami from 2008-11.
