BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian activists are reporting more air strikes today on Islamic State group positions on a town near the Iraq border. So far, there's no comment from the U.S. or its Arab allies. Activists say aircraft conducted at least 10 strikes in and around Boukamal, where the extremists control both sides of the frontier.
NEW YORK (AP) — President Barack Obama takes the world stage today in an address to the United Nations General Assembly. The speech is expected to be heavy on the battle against militants from the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. The Ukraine and Ebola crises are also expected to be topics.
PARIS (AP) — Some in France are up in arms after what the defense minister characterizes as a "huge foulup" that allowed three suspected French jihadis who had traveled to Syria to walk away free on their arrival back in Marseille (mahr-SAY'). The three were sent home by police in Turkey without French police knowing about it. Making matters worse, French authorities initially said the three men were apprehended at Paris' Orly airport.
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia's conservative Aceh (ah-cheh) province is moving toward a new, Islam-inspired law that prescribes public caning for men and women caught having homosexual sex. Aceh was granted the right to implement a version of Islamic Shariah law in 2006 as part of a peace deal to end a separatist war. It already canes people found guilty of adultery and gambling. Gay rights activist King Oey says he'll urge the central government to strike down the law if it passes.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani intelligence officials say U.S. drones have been flying today near the Afghan border with deadly results. The officials say 10 militant suspects have been killed by a suspected missile strike in the country's North Waziristan tribal region in the northwest. The tribal region is home to a mix of local and al-Qaida-linked foreign militants.
