SALT LAKE CITY — After their performances in a win over Michigan, Utah linebacker Gionni Paul and place-kicker Andy Phillips were named the Defensive and Specialist Pac-12 Players of the Week, respectively.
Paul made his debut with Utah after sustaining a foot injury in spring camp. He lead the team with 14 total tackles (10 solo) and had an interception and fumble recovery late in the game to help Utah hold onto a 26-10 lead and eventual win over Michigan.
Paul was one of several key players on the defense that kept Michigan out of the red zone all game. The defense only allowed a field goal on the first drive of the game. Paul was also named the Athlon Sports National Defensive Player of the Week.
Phillips scored more points than the entire Michigan team, making 4-of-5 field goals and two PATs. His made field goals were of 35, 38, 48 and 50 yards. Phillips’ only miss came after a two-hour rain delay on a 41-yard attempt that hit the uprights.
Phillips is the first Ute to make four fields goals in a game since Coleman Peterson did it in 2011. Phillips is 14th in the nation in scoring, averaging 11 points a game.
