ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — An Algerian security official says a Frenchman has been kidnapped by militants in an area where North Africa's al-Qaida branch has a hideout. The security official said the man was hiking in the mountainous region. The kidnapping of the 55-year-old man comes as the Islamic State group calls for attacks on Europeans, particularly the French.
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — Just one day after it opened, Liberia's largest Ebola treatment center is already handling 112 patients. But not all of them are confirmed to have the disease. Health officials in the West African country say 46 of the people admitted to the center have tested positive for Ebola. The rest are being held for further observation, and are being treated for other diseases. According to the latest World Health Organization numbers, Ebola is believed to have sickened more than 5,800 people in Liberia and four other countries. It is blamed for more than 2,800 deaths.
NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of activists protesting what they say is Wall Street's role in the climate crisis have gathered in lower Manhattan's financial district. Scores of environmental activists dressed in blue are marching, carrying signs, chanting and sitting down on Broadway and elsewhere as workers and tourists look on. Organizers say the protest is meant to highlight the role corporations play in stalling political action to combat global warming. It comes a day after more than 100,000 participated in the People's Climate March through Manhattan.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is expressing concern that an intruder carrying a knife was able to get into the White House. Obama press secretary Josh Earnest says Obama is "obviously concerned" that a man got through the White House front doors Friday evening a few minutes after the first family left for Camp David. But Earnest says Obama has complete confidence in the Secret Service. Earnest wouldn't say whether Obama wants to see security expanded to a wider perimeter around the White House. The Secret Service is discussing that as an option.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Wesleyan University in Connecticut is ordering its fraternities and sororities to become coeducational within the next three years. School officials sent a letter today informing the organizations of the decision. A school spokeswoman says in order to quality for housing and the use of social spaces on campus, the organizations must have both male and female members and each sex must also must be well represented in the leadership of the groups.
