SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Violent crime was up across the country last year for the first time since 2001, according to a new FBI report.
Of the three Utah cities with 100,000 or more residents, violent crimes were up in Provo and West Valley City and down in Salt Lake City, the FBI's 2005 Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report said.
West Valley City had 516 violent crimes reported, a 7.3 percent increase, and Provo had 181 violent crimes, a 16.8 percent increase.
Salt Lake City reported a 3.5 percent decrease in violent crime.
Nationwide, violent crime -- murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault -- increased 2.5 percent from 2004 to 2005.
Regarding the higher figures, Provo police Capt. Richard Healey said, "I don't know that it really represents anything. Things go up, and then they go down."
