RENO, Nev. (AP) — Leaders of the union for transit workers in the Reno-area's bus system say they have at least temporarily averted a strike by agreeing to extend their current contract through the end of July while labor talks continue.
Teamsters Local 533 announced the move Monday, a day after union members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike. The existing two-year contract was to expire at midnight Monday.
Local President Gary Watson says the current contract remains in place through July 31 under the agreement with MV Transportation, the Texas-based contractor managing the system.
Watson said Sunday's vote did not initiate a strike but that union leadership had been prepared to call a work stoppage at any time beginning July 1. He said too many issues remained unresolved to reach a deal Monday.
