DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit nonprofit says it's getting $125 million over the next five years from the federal government to help educate children in the city.
Matrix Human Services announced the funding from the Department of Health a Human Services in a statement Wednesday. The nonprofit says the Office of Head Start is investing tens of millions of dollars a year in its Head Start program and others.
The Matrix Head Start program currently offers year-round programs at a number of Detroit locations. It says new funding will allow an expansion from 14 to 28 centers by January, with increased enrollment to more than 1,900 children up to age 5.
Matrix says it's is one of 15 organizations in five U.S. communities selected for federal funding under the initiative.
