LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 26-year-old California man was jailed in Las Vegas pending a court appearance Wednesday on attempted murder and other felony charges in a weekend stabbing that police said stemmed from an accidental bump and a racially charged exchange of words on a crowded sidewalk in front of a Strip casino.

Miguel Treto of Azusa, California, was chased, disarmed of a four-inch knife and beaten unconscious a little before 2 a.m. Sunday in front of the Quad Hotel & Casino by friends of Tevin Hayes, the 20-year-old man who was stabbed, according to a police report.

Hayes and Treto were taken to separate hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Investigators noted that Treto and at least one of the three Hayes family members who were reported to have been involved in the fight appeared intoxicated.

Treto denied during an interview with police that he ever had a knife, but he remembered fighting with a group of black men.

Hayes' cousins, Aaron Miles and Kim Miles, told police that Kim Miles bumped into Treto on a pedestrian walkway near the Flamingo Hotel about an hour before the attack, and that Treto responded by shouting racial epithets at them as they walked away.

The Miles brothers said Treto and two other men approached and attacked them and their brother, Kamiko Miles, about an hour later near the Quad.

Several witnesses saw the fight and the weapon, and investigators were reviewing security video from the area, police said. A black and silver folding knife was found next to clothing and blood where paramedics treated Treto, police said.

Any video of the scene would be impounded as evidence and wouldn't be made public until court proceedings, Officer Laura Meltzer said Tuesday.

Treto was being held on attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and battery with a weapon causing substantial bodily harm charges. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
